Great audio bag for the Mix Pre 6 and 3
Wednesday, 30 March 2022  |

Sachtler 607 sound bag for Mix Pre 6 (or MixPre 3)

This is a very well made, well thought out and full featured sound bag which will hold the Mix Pre 6, radio receivers and other kit with enough space at the sides to protect the connectors and allow your fingers to reach the on-off switch on the left and the selector knob wheel on the right. It provides access from each side and from the back and front pocket compartments, which unzip and fold down whilst the pockets remain zipped closed.

The main compartment splits into two parts with a removable rigid divider - one part for the MixPre and the other for transmitters or accessories. The front and back zipped pockets can hold transmitters, batteries etc. The pockets have openings to the main bag which allow you to thread cables. The front pocket has a zip around 3 sides and will accommodate ENG Headphones such as the Sennheiser HD25 as well as small radio TX/RX units. The back pocket is smaller with a side zip only. Both will fold down from the main bag sides to give access to the interior. The pockets also hold up to the side of the bag with sturdy velcro so you do not have to zip them to the bag to hold them in place. In addition to the removable / repositionable main bag divider there is a thick spacer to fill out the other half of the main bag at the front if you do not have kit there (making a compartment below for a mic or cables). Four 'U' shaped velcro-attachable dividers and 4 small vlcro straps are also provided which you can use to hold your kit or configure to make an upper and lower space in the second main compartment. The MixPre fixes to the main rigid divider with narrow but long velcro ribbons which you thread through the MixPre front capstans - pull this tight and fix down the other side of the divider and the MixPre will be held firmly - you can also add other velcro if you wish. They even supply a wide pice of black sticky back velcro which you can attach to your kit.

I have mounted my MixPre 6 with the large 'L' battery mount. You can use this mount with two small batteries which will be about the same width as the MixPree but I have the larger 950 ones so I can 'only' attach one - I have mounted this battery so that it protrudes on the bottom of the MixPre so that the large battery projects into the back pocket through the opening in the bag, and that works fine. Don't be put off by this bag not having an opening in the bottom to get at the battery or SD card - you can do this by unzipping the sides of the main back pocket from the back of the bag, which gives access to the battery and bottom of the MixPre from the back. There is a transparent rain cover which is permanently fixed to the bag so you have to fold it down over the back pocket when not needed (I would have preferred this to have been detachable and a bit bigger to enable your hands to get to the knobs when it is in use but it does cover the whole length of the top opening which some manufacturers don't do).

You will either love or hate the puffed sleeves which keep out the water if it rains. The sleeves have two zips with two zippers on each so you can open them right up to see the sockets on the sides of the MixPre. The double zippers enable you to thread cables from the Radio Receivers on the outside through the zip to keep them tidy. The sleeves also have the usual elastic drawstring with a toggle to close them up - and a nice touch, the elastic strings have a small hook at the end so they can be hooked back to the bag / strap fixing to keep them out of the way. You can also roll up a good length of mic cable and store it in the sleeves without unplugging when you are on the move. The bag also has two detachable radio receiver mounts attached to the floppy sleeves - which is a bit odd in some respects (they could have just put a simple strap across the front pocket to clip the receivers to) but they work fine and can be removed easily if you don't need radio receivers or have room for them in the bag.

Finally, this bag comes with a very nice neck strap with a padded shoulder - designed to be 'breathable' but with thin silicone gripper ribs to stop it sliding off your shoulder. The shoulder pad is also sculpted so that it fits round your neck more comfortably. The strap can attach to any pair of the four mounting hoops on the top of the bag. Someone commented that the protruding back pocket tipped the mixer awkwardly towards their body but this is not the case if you select the correct mounting points for the strap - depending on what you have in the bag and the weight distribution. I normally attach the strap to the front right hoop and back left one - this balances the weight and makes the bag sit vertically with my configuration. This diagonal arrangement also means that the shoulder strap does not obstruct my hand/arm when reaching the fader knobs. And the projecting back pocket also serves to hold the mixer at about 45 degrees if you are using it on a table top.

All in all a great sound bag of excellent quality which can easily be customised with the supplied dividers to suit your needs and preferences. I think the bag was originally designed by the well respected camera bag manufacturer 'Petrol' until their products were taken on by Sachtler, the professional tripod and fluid head manufacturer.

TIP:
Make a loop in all 3.5mm cables and tether them to the interior of the bag with velcro so that any movement in the cables does not pull on the 3.5mm jacks, which could pull them out or cause crackles. (I wish SoundDevices would use 3.5mm jack sockets with locking collars - Tascam do this with their small inexpensive pocket recorder so why not here ? (SD please note !)
